I was speaking to a colleague of over 10years today who I knew had been a very active climber throughout the 70’s and 80’s.

He asked if it was the Orion MC I was a member of…he had been on our Gallery page and recognised me in a couple of pics :)

He went on to say that he also recognised Brian in some of the photos and that he knew him at one time. This was way back in the Clachaig days at Dumbarton Rock. He also remembers John McGroarty and Stevie Jackson.

His name is Colin Ogilvie…any of you old hands remember him :?: He never actually joined, prefering to just hang out with the Clachaig amongst others.

Oh, and he was very impressed with the Gallery
:)

I remember his name from the club list the year I joined but don`t think we met.
Think he made some first ascents on Binnein an Fhidleir or somewhere.
The last I heard John McGroarty was in Limerick.Stevie is in Blanefield...

Don`t we all ...he had a bit of trouble in the route finding department :D Had a good day out with him on Talisman in the Gorms years back.

He has been quite ill of recent years and I think he was on regular kidney dialysis and awaiting a transplant if I remember correctly. Probably Jools can fill you in properly..

John T was a great guy to be in the hills with (and at a hut). I remember some great days climbing with him. Can vouch for his route finding difficulties. But on chosy alpine slag heaps he was superb. I'm sure Brian could vouch for this as they did lots in the Alps together.

Definitely one of the guys who was a big loss following the Orion/Clachaig split.

Spoke to Colin again the following day and he mentioned that he had heard way back that John Thomson had climbed Nijinski at Auchinstarry...no mean feat at E5 :!:

I don`t think he ever done Nijinski. The route finding problems alone would have proved unsurmountable

As John said he was excellent company at the huts :D

Here he is in relaxed mode outside the pub in Lamlash after a weekends climbing on Arran.

I met John Thompson just before the summer ... he's running a course at Ayr, and up until that point I was the only one wot teached it, so he came round for a chat about it. I should drop him a line to see how he's getting on.
