Five of us took the Fri night train from Bridge of Orchy up to the hostel near the remote station on Rannoch Moor at Corrour. We went up Sgor Gaibhre and Carn Dearg in the damp clag on the Saturday, and sat out a blizzard in the hostel in front of the fire the following day until it was time to fight our way to Corrour for the last train home.

In the hostel. Alistair, Jon, me, Bob and Graeme Cornwallis in the background with his back to the camera.

There were 2 tame stags at Ossian. One was called Chieftain and I can`t remember the other one.
The warden Tom Rigg "tamed" them over time. When the rutting season came round the boys took off for the hill for their Nat King every year.
Having no real fear of man they were easy targets for the hunters.Tom told all the estates about them and tied a fluorescent bib or paint or something like that on them but some twat still shot Chieftain.
Tam Algie and I spent a lot of time there in the winter in the days when the hostel was left open for folk.Same with Glen Affric.Abuse of the privilege by some sadly meant that they were locked up over winter from late 70`s early 80`s onwards.Glen Affric even had a supply of peat laid in by the summer warden and if you were in before Xmas there was usually gas left for the kitchen.

They still leave one room open in the winter at the Affric one…out back in the outhouse. Unfortunately, due to the room having no fireplace it is a pretty miserable place to spend a long, cold winters night :( It does however have a few bunks, some blankets and a table and a couple of chairs.

Best to go up in the spring when the place is fully open. It’s a lot more cheery then :)
