That was very informative about the solstice, Gavin. And I am keen to hear more about the climbing in the area, the geological aspects of the landscape, and those cowrie shells.

The solstice is fast approaching (a week this Friday) and so I think some organisation is required.

I suggest that those wanting to go come down to the pub this Thursday. We can go through the normal thrashing out of details that usually happens before meets and hopefully we can decide on a definite location, numbers and transport.

Unfortunately, I am booked to go and see a kiddies Disney show at Braehead on the Fri and will be unable to come :( unless it is decided to go somewhere closer to home than Ben Hiant. I can get away from Glasgow about 8pm earliest. Alternatively, if the high camp was delayed to the Saturday I suppose I could head up then.

Anyway, we should all talk on Thursday.

Oh, and it'll probably be raining anyway...this good weather can't last

Not sure if I will make it down the pub this Thursday (if so, be late on). I am, however, up for the Solstice Camp - I have my druids costume ready! I will be able to leave Glasgow 5-5.30pm on the Friday and could take my car if need be. I am not fussed where, although Ben Hiant does look like a good spot.

Did it finally get decided last night as to where we are going next week then?

I'm probably going to go up both nights. Aiming to get some extra hills done

Is anyone else game for going up for two nights :?:

In the finest traditions of the club I think they decided to put the decision off

Suggestions in here please......

In true Orion tradition there was much discussion and little decision making going on last night

The only decision that was made was to make the high camp on the Saturday rather than the Fri. This seemed to be preferable as the Fri could have been a bit of a rush job with folk having to leave after work on the Friday evening. There seemed to be a good number who were interested in coming along either for just the Sat high camp or going somewhere on the Fri and meeting up with the rest on the Saturday. Interested were…
Fraser, Martine, Gavin, Jen, Gordon, Bob, Ross, Jules, Iain and myself. Sorry if I’ve missed anyone.

As for venues, here’s a few suggestion. Anyone got any preferences. If not I’ll make an executive decision :) Feel free to make your own (sensible) suggestions and of course everything is weather dependant.

Ben Hiant in Ardnamurchan 528m, NM 537632 OS Sheet 47. Bear in mind a very, very long drive especially for those just heading up for the one night.

Mam na Gualainn 796m, NN 115625 Sheet 41. Hill above Loch Leven, close to the Mamores.

Pap of Glencoe 742m. Although good camping spot might be hard to find due to rocky summit.

Beinn a’ Chrulaiste 857m, NN 246566 Sheet 41. Hill above the Kingie in Glen Coe.

Garbh Bheinn NM 903622 in Ardgour. Gavin says that there is a good camping spot at a col on the south ridge. Gavin, is that the spot where you get a good view of the South Face of Great Ridge :?:

And my two favourites…

Beinn Lora (suggestion by Alex) 377m NW 919377 Sheet 49. Fantastic wee hill and as long as the weather is kind the views over Lismore to Mull and Morvern towards a setting sun would be awesome. Both Glen Coe and Ben Cruachan are within easy reach for hill day the next day.

But this is the one that I have decided to champion. It is where we had originally intended to camp last year at the solstice…

Beinn a’Bheithir, or more specifically at the wee lochan at spot height 758m NN 033578 on the west ridge of the mountain. The evening views would be stunning from here and following day we could pack up and continue round the ridge over the two munros. Vote for this one now :D

Beinn a’Bheithir would be my preference, but then again I can't go :?

Hey I like the slow decision-making process, it is the true mark of an anarchist collective such as the Orion! Out of the above options, Beinn a'Bheithir would be my preference if the majority want to go to the Glencoe area.

Does it have wheelchair access? If so, I may be able to come!
