| Post subject: | Who wants to go on the Jura Meet? (w/e of 2nd May) |
On the programme of summer meets I listed a camping trip to Jura for the first May holiday weekend. A fair number of you indicated that you would be keen on a trip here so I’m hoping the interest is still there. I’m not sure what would suit most folk who want to go. You could head over Fri and come back Mon, or go over Sat come back Monday. Personally I intend to go over on the Friday, but as I need to be home on Monday I will getting the last ferry home on Sunday. The best place to camp is probably at the Jura Hotel in the main village of Craighouse. The hotel offers camping on their shore side field with facilities including toilets and showers. The village itself has a tea shop and general store, so if you need to stock up on food then supplies can be obtained locally. The village is also within walking distance of the Paps of Jura, which I would assume would be a target for all those going. There are two possible options on how to get there. 1. Kennacraig to Port Askaig (Islay) ferry , followed by the Port Askaig to Feolin (Jura) ferry. Bikes could then be used for the 8miles from Feolin to Craighouse. This would also give the advantage of having transport on the island for the duration of stay enabling further exploration. The alternative to cycling is arranging for the mini bus from Craighouse to pick us up. Costs: K to PA ferry return £14.95, PA to F ferry return £1.30. Haven’t enquired to mini bus costs yet. 2. Tayvallich to Craighouse ferry. Obviously this has the benefit of a more direct and faster crossing, however the boat is small and I suspect the crossing could be subject to weather conditions?. We would definitely need to book this asap as it only takes 12 folk and being a holiday weekend could be in demand. Downside is the cost £35 return. So who is interested in going and does anyone have any preference/opinion on when we go and how we get there. Your comments would be appreciated. I would organise all the routes, times, etc but what would probably happen is that folk will say “that doesn’t suit me, I’ll go on a different crossing at a different time”. So if I can get some sort of general consensus then I can begin putting something together. Personally I think that we might be better going via Kennacraig as we wouldn’t need to book (and therefore would not be committed if the weather was looking particularly grim). Also it’s much cheaper Useful links: Jura Hotel http://www.juradevelopment.co.uk/camping.htm Ferry to Port Askaig http://www.calmac.co.uk/summer-timetabl ... y-oban.gif Ferry to Feolin http://www.calmac.co.uk/summer-timetabl ... feolin.gif Ferry to Craighouse http://www.jurapassengerferry.com/time.html |

Oh well, here a positive reply after three negative...I would love to go. Jura been on my wish list for 2 years now. Would prefer the cheaper option of ferry crossing. also the 'no booking/ no comitting' option would be preferable as nobody will go if it will be a horrendous forecast. Camping next to the hotel sounds good, so does the bike option. Silke |

Thanks for the positive reply Silke, however if the lack of interest is maintained then this meet is in danger of being cancelled Anyone else out there wanting to go Anyway Silke, I know that you are very keen to go to Jura and as I said to you in the pub last week, there is every likelyhood that if the meet doesn't go ahead then a few of us might be heading over later in the spring or summer. |

I am also keen to go but can't really confirm till nearer the time. I have the Friday afternoon off and was thinking of only going Friday to Sunday - if the ferry times tie in? |

Unless there is a late rush of folk wanting to go on this meet I regret to say that it looks like for the first time ever a meet will have to be cancelled due to lack of numbers |

Perhaps we could do St. Kilda instead? |
