I'm not sure I'm going to make it down to the pub tonight as I'm still struggling mightily against a case of manflu. Does anyone want to head out somewhere this weekend? I'm pretty flexible where, but fancy some climbing if some kind person is willing to look after a n00b like me?

Ach, I'll come down and persuade one of ye, or threaten you with my germs .

Well with only 4 folk at the pub last week and 3 this week, does that mean that next week there will only be 2 folk :?: :?

The withering attendance on a Thursday night could be put down to the recent problems with the pub...but I don't think so...you only have to look at how few folk have been going out recently. The point is further illustrated by the fact that a couple club members had to recently resort to going out on seperate trips with members of two other Glasgow clubs (the JMCS and the LMC) And furthermore that the Jura Meet looks like it will be cancelled due to lack of numbers...the first time I remember such a thing happening in my time in the club.

Some folk will say that the club has always had peaks and troughs, well in my opinion this is one large trough that may prove hard to climb out of. And yet more will argue that the winter meets were hugely successful, forgetting the more poorly attended last two and the fact that in between meets there really weren't many members doing much at all.

So c'mon everyone, summer is nearly here, the weather has been pretty good recently, let's get out there and enjoy it while it lasts.

On that note...anyone want to come with JB and myself to Culra next weekend. The idea is to bag 4 of John's last few remaining munros. If you haven't been there before it is a grand wild area, although I would say that a bike is advantageous to take the pain off the distance in.

Getting back to Dom's original thread  Sorry Dom, I swithered about coming out this weekend but I really have too much on. However, if you don't manage to find anyone to get out with, I just might be able to squeeze a half days climbing at a local outcrop.

Hope I get club credit for actually making it to the pub last week?!!

Having a conversation about climbing is about as exciting as it gets for me these days, but the good news is that I have finally found a pair of comfortable maternity trews that can double as climbing trousers (which stay up due to enormous quantities of elastic) and offer support for 6 month old bump. So I hope to continue at the climbing wall for another few weeks at least. (Last week I warmed up seconding two 5+ leads - bit of a heave-ho with all my extra pounds). As for walking, I can manage a mile or so, but it just pechts me out. Ah well there's always next year.

Dom well done on overtaking me on the munro count. I'm so jealous. I trust you will be leading HS (at least) like Silke by the time I get back to this game.

I think it's quite sweet that Orioneers are making pals with folk from other clubs. Spread the love. Maybe it's a covert recruitment drive.

Unless the number of folk in the pub increase over the next few weeks I think we should pull the website temporarily until numbers improve. It`s no good having prospective new members faced with a pub with with only two people in it as would have happened last night. They are going to go somewhere else.....

You could be right Alex, but it's not just the lack of folk in the pub. What could happen is that newbies come down to the pub for a few weeks, all the time wondering "when I am going to get out with this mob", before buggering off to somewhere else.

Example: The two young, keen, experienced fellows who have been down a few times recently will probably be never seen again :( And they are the sort of guys we are in dire need of enlisting into the club. I was keen to get them out and invited them along for a day on the hill, I also made sure that they were invited along to Auchinstarry one evening, but the sad fact is that between the two of them they probably have more climbing and hill days in a month than the whole of the Orion membership manages in a month :!: I suppose the upside of any keen new members we do manage to keep a hold of is that they may galvanise other folk to get out :?:

Pulling the website doesn't make any sense. Some potential new members may be put off by the low numbers on a Thursday, but without the website they're not going to know that the club exists...

Scott - when do you think you'd be up for going to a crag? I better get cracking if Martine is going to lay down horrendous challenges like that!
