After a truely awesome evening last year (and not being eaten by my tent compadre's - as everyone had warned me might happen) can i ask if anyone is planning to go for a wee campy up a hill this year for winter solstice??? I have now got my work rota up until April next year. Surffice to say, completely shafted is the world's biggest understatement! But i do have a bit of time off before Xmas and would love to head up for an evening. Need to plan a bit ahead cos need to organise flights back down south to gather my yearlty parental Christmas socks before skipping Xmas completely and parking myself in A&E with the lovely drunken locals of Glasgow for the rest of the festive season...oh and New Years too. Brilliant!

Thanks ;-)

Glad to hear you enjoyed the camp. I must admit it was an interesting location, with excellent weather. I'd be keen to do another ... I'll drop Steve Kirk, Brian, Martina and Steve Wells a line to see if they're interested too.

Any thoughts about a venue? If the Inverness contingent are interested, then we should really aim for somewhere on the A9. If not, then something nearer to hand. Cruach Ardrain, perhaps? It has a great spot on the summit to take a few tents.

I could possibly be interested, but will have to see closer to time...being a few days before Xmas it's a busy time of year.

How's about a Ray Mears type night under a tarpaulin in the woods and a raging bonfire. Now that seems a much more exciting winter solstice experience than a long night waiting for daylight on some dreich summit somewhere.

I'd be up for that.

I like the sound of John's option best... my sleeping bag is not winter grade! Can we forage in the forest for Christmas presents for loved ones?

So grovelling under a tarp in a rain lashed forest is better than battling the forces of nature on an open mountaintop? Where's your sense of nobility, man?

Im with Gavin...original is best! Just double up on sleeping bags and heh presto 4 season bag.

Nothing like a nice bottle o red on top of the hill. Plus sparklers in the forest always countryside threatening forest fire. Couldnt have that!

Gordy, hope you're not thinking about taking my old tent...although it can stand up to some pretty harsh weather, the winter solstice camps at the tops of hills can be pretty grim, blowy affairs and a NF Tadpole is a 3 season backpacking tent

OK, so this year it looks like the Solstice camp will be the evening of Saturday 20 December. Those who have expressed an interest so far, at least on the web or to me in person (at least those I remember), are:

Dom
Adam
Gordon
Brian
Steve Wells (possibly)
Gavin (me)

I still have to contact the old stalwart, Steve Kirk. Is anyone else interested?

It would be helpful to know who is interested, so we can sort out tents, etc. If you have an ‘uber tent’, let me know and that will give us a wider range of possibilities. If anyone is prepared to drive, let me know, as it might help with getting transport sorted. If anyone on the list has had second thoughts, let me know.

It is always a bit of a lottery, the winter solstice camp, ranging from life affirming star studded skies and aurora, all the way through to whiteout, 'challenging' weather, and a general battle for survival.

For reference, you’ll need a good thermarest, a good sleeping bag, axe, crampons, some scoff, a bottle of bevy, and a light heart in the face of adversity.

Last year's camp (good weather) can be seen here http://orionmc.freeforums.org/winter-solstice-camp-2007-t77.html

Another camp here http://orionmc.freeforums.org/more-winter-camping-ben-vorlich-t109.html

Volunteers, please.

Gavin, I may come along  But being so close to Xmas we often have things on so I'll have to make a last minute call
on it.

So for now don't take me into consideration when organising things and I'll just tag along if possible.
